January 23rd, 2012What began as a men’s indoor activity more than 100 years ago, softball has transformed into primarily a women’s outdoor sport that has gained substantially in popularity over the past few decades.
Those humble beginnings in the 19th century have been paralleled by the changing trends in softball uniforms history, one that has gone through substantial changes since the sport was first invented by George Hancock in 1887 after he viewed a football game between Harvard and Yale.
Players used little more than an altered boxing glove and stick while playing on a hastily drawn diamond within a large indoor playing area. Teams were quickly formed and the popularity of softball spread and became a popular year-round sport. The first organized softball team was founded in Chicago and they and they travelled around the countryside to challenge local teams.
By the turn of the 20th century, other teams began forming softball clubs and making their own uniforms, featuring the local styles and trends that were popular at the time. By the late 1930’s, synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon were introduced, making for rugged, yet lightweight uniforms that could feature the team colors and a variety of insignias or decorations that helped enhance the team spirit and pride such uniforms generated. This basic trend has continued in softball uniforms history through the present.
Perhaps the most famous softball player who has ever lived is Jennie Finch, the pitcher who led the US softball team to a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Born in La Mirada, California, Jennie began playing softball at the age of five and her Dad became her pitching coach.
From there, Finch had an astounding high school career which led to her going to the University of Arizona. In her four years, she was a three time All-American pitcher and first baseman, plus the “Honda Award” winner for player of the year. As pitcher, she struck out 1,023 batters making her 23rd on the all-time list.
So successful was Finch’s career that the University of Arizona retired her number in 2003, before she even went to the Summer Olympics the following year. She chalked up 109 wins while at Arizona, making her 12th all-time in the NCAA at the time of her graduation. Those wins also included a 32 win unbeaten streak during her junior year, an NCAA record.
And in terms of softball uniform history, the trends have changed along with line of baseball. Batting helmets are commonly worn now and caps are donned by the team on the field. Although it is somewhat common to see the softball pitcher wear a visor rather than a cap, which is almost a trademark of Jennie Finch who didn’t invent the trend, but her own popularity helped to promote it.

First introduced by James Naismith at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Massachusetts, it was a form of energetic sport suitable for playing indoors during the winter. The first ball was actually a soccer ball and the first hoops were actually peach bushel baskets attached to the wall. Those peach baskets are how basketball got its name in the first place. Originally played with nine players, it wasn’t until 1898 that teams of five became standard.
Soon other colleges embraced the game and in 1934 the first college games were held at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. The games brought intensified interest in the sport, and by the 1950’s college basketball was considered a major sport, leading the way for professional basketball.
Basketball uniforms and basketball jerseys have come a long way as well. In the inception of the sport the uniforms went along with the fashion of the day. Men wore long pants and short sleeved shirts and women wore long skirts and long sleeved blouses. They were modest, but not very functional. As the sport became more organized the basketball uniforms became more colorful adding to team identification and team spirit.
In 1917 the introduction of the Converse All Star show by the Boston Rubber Shoe Company added another element to the basketball uniform. Players and coaches began to realize that different clothing options allowed for more movement and better performance. In the early 1920’s men and women’s uniforms changed from long pants and long skirts to shorts and over the knee socks. Men wore sleeveless basketball jerseys and women wore short sleeved shirts. There was some debate surrounding women playing so for safety precautions women also wore knee pads.
In 1935 shiny satin shorts were added to basketball uniforms to bring some flash and dash to the game. These remained in style until the 1970’s as did the shorter shorts, knee socks, and even headbands were added (to aid in the reduction of sweat in your eyes). In the 1980s and 1990s basketball uniforms and basketball jerseys went through a radical transformation. Shorts got longer, under arm holes got bigger and socks seemed to shrink to ankle height overnight. Women’s style of basketball uniforms follow suit in that their shorts became longer and their socks became shorter. Women’s basketball uniform shirts also transformed from short sleeve to a sleeveless tank, with the tank straps much wider than the men’s and the arm holes much closer to the armpit.
Basketball uniforms material have also changed. They are typically synthetic and used mainly for their ability to wick away the moisture and sweat from the player’s body helping to keep them cool during game play. Logos and colors remain the hallmark of team identification. Shoes are no longer basic Converse all-stars but provide cushion for the heels and support for ankles, helping to alleviate injuries. One part of the basketball uniform that has not made a comeback is knee pads for women. While some players choose to wear protective gear it is not required.

According to history, it was between 1888 and 1889 where the stripes on the baseball uniforms were launched by three major teams – Detroit, Washington from National League and Brooklyn. However, the striped baseball uniforms were only short-lived and were only reintroduced again during 1907, 1916 and 1917 respectively by Brooklyn. As such, Brooklyn became known as the trend-setters among the baseball teams, sporting uniforms that are altogether wacky and unique most of the times. The first numbers to be added to the uniforms were initiated by the Cleveland Indians in 1916. They placed the numbers on their left sleeve and it wasn’t until 1929 that they finally put the numbers at the back of the uniform. By the year 1932, all the major league baseball teams had their own numbers. It was also during the 1930s that almost all teams had their own logo or team nickname etched on their home shirts. Again, known to be imaginative and fashion-conscious, Brooklyn Dodgers were the first to add the numbers to the front in 1952. The first team to also ever place the player’s name at the back panel of the uniform is Chicago White Sox during the year 1960.
